No fitness enthusiast can honestly say that they have always done exactly what they set out to do on their work out. Promise ourselves and our, and at least once in our lives we will have called it quits after half an hour or less. Sometimes this is for a legitimate reason, but often it is because we just do not have the discipline. There are ways, however, to lessen the risk of us throwing the towel in.
Firstly, the use of modern technology is excellent in ensuring adherence to goals. With an app or computer built into a fitness device such as a treadmill or cross trainer, there is no room for human error or laxity. If we task the device with making sure we run for half an hour, you can bet it will be the for half an hour. This is not to advocate an overreliance on technology instead of our own inbuilt discipline. More, this is a way of ensuring that whatever has our backs is honest to the minute or second.
Second, it is possible to tailor our work out so that we do not feel overly tired halfway through and then simply slack off because we have burned ourselves out. An ‘up and down’ approach ensures that, if we are engaged in some hard-core working out, a more relaxed set of exercises is just around the corner, giving us a chance to recharge and exercise at a manageable pace. Avoiding a cycle of an easy start followed by an absolute powerhouse of fast paced cardio and weight lifting is always sensible if we know we have issues with discipline.
Lastly, whether the procrastination is with getting out to the gym in the first place or is simply finishing our workout, a reward system is always sensible. There are now many apps that will tell us if we have reached our required goal or have longer to go, and remind us whether we qualify for a reward. Admittedly, it is easy to simply ignore these apps, but if we do that, then we have bigger problems!
