There are two distinctly separate schools of thought when it comes to fashion. Some like to wear sports and fashion brands, creating a casual, fun but ultimately less classy look, whilst others prefer the work by fashion designers to make an elegant, classy but definitely more formal statement. The truth is that there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on who we are as people and whom we are trying to attract.
The key with fashion brands is really to not overdo it. It looks ridiculous when someone walks down the street clad head to toe in sports branded clothing, regardless of their age or income level. It does not scream wealth or panache; it simply says that the person is desperate to be noticed.
Overdoing it with designer brands is also a faux pas. Walking around in a four or five figure wardrobe screams ‘try hard’; everybody knows this is not our usual day to day wear and that we are trying to possibly compensate for something. Moreover, it will only attract shallow, wealth and numbers focused people.
With both fashion and designer brands, the key is to blend it in with a mixture of neutral clothes. A Hugo Boss or Adidas t-shirt will look just as smart with a pair of unbranded skinny jeans as would a Prada button down shirt costing ten times more. And when it comes to jeans, unless it’s something that is unique to a certain brand, nobody is going to care whether the jeans are from Tommy Hilfiger or Balmain. If they do, you’re attracting the wrong person.
There was a time when proudly showing off brands was seen as extravagant and impressive. However, as time has gone on, it’s now just seen as trashy. Many fashion designers have openly said that their favourite pieces are the ones that have no branding at all on them; they attract down to earth, truly classy people and this is true with sports brands as well.
Toning it down means you can create an eye-catching look with either sports or designer brands. The wearer is what gives the clothes class.
